Sen. Rand Paul Criticizes USAID's Alleged Wasteful Spending
At a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) highlighted what he called reckless and wasteful foreign aid spending by the
United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He argued that while the U.S. faces a $36 trillion national debt, taxpayer money is being wasted
on unnecessary and ideologically driven projects overseas.
Examples of Alleged Wasteful Spending by USAID:
•
Ukraine: $4.8 million allocated to Ukraine’s public affairs office in Kyiv to fund social media influencers. USAID also funded Ukrainian fashion designers to
attend the Paris Fashion Show.
•
Paraguay: $2.1 million to enhance Paraguay’s border security, while U.S. border security remains underfunded.
•
Guatemala: $2 million allocated for transgender surgeries, hormone therapy, and genderaffirming care.
•
Brazil: $3 million to promote girlcentered climate action, a concept Paul ridiculed as unnecessary.
•
Colombia: $25,000 for a transgender opera, questioning if there was no audience willing to fund it themselves.
•
Peru: $32,000 to create a comic featuring a trans superhero to address social and mental health issues.
•
Ecuador: $20,000 for a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) drag theater program.
•
Iraq: $20 million to fund a Sesame Street show.
•
Egypt & Tunisia: $6 million for boosting sustainable tourism in Egypt, and $50 million for Tunisia’s tourism industry, despite it being one of Africa’s most
visited countries.
•
Afghanistan: $87.9 million to support Afghan farmers, including poppy farming, which supplies 90% of the world’s heroin. $15 million allocated to
Talibancontrolled Afghanistan to distribute contraceptives and condoms. A $3 billion Afghan reconstruction fund remains, which Paul criticized as
unnecessary.
•
Ireland: $70,000 for a live musical event promoting DEI initiatives.
•
Global Disinformation Index: $330,000 spent compiling a disinformation index that allegedly blacklisted conservative media outlets.
•
EcoHealth Alliance & COVID19 Origins: $54 million in funding for EcoHealth Alliance, which is linked to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, suspected to be
the source of COVID19.
Paul's Broader Criticism of Foreign Aid:
Argued that the U.S. borrows money just to give it away in foreign aid, calling it financially irresponsible.
Stated that the U.S. government should prioritize paying down debt and supporting American citizens rather than funding unnecessary projects abroad.
Compared the practice to a broke worker taking out a loan to give money to a homeless person, emphasizing that the U.S. cannot afford to be the world’s
piggy bank.
Final Message:
•
Called for an end to wasteful spending, bureaucracy, and unjustified foreign aid.
•
Urged for fiscal responsibility to put American taxpayers first.
